“Backstreets to the Bridge”

Sydney, Australia 1954 with 2014 cars.                                                          By Calvin Camacho

Photo Description

In this photo I was trying to depict the Australia that is no more. The Australia that is seen in TV shows and Movies. The Past. I tried to capture it in the 50’s era displayed in this picture by the filter and the architecture of the building on the right. However I didn’t want a complete 1950s shot with the vehicles and clothing they had, as it wouldn’t be original. So I captured a picture with a 1950s base and 2014 objects. Creating, what I feel to be a City in the past with today’s people.

In this photo I want the audience to think about how everyone is so reliant on phones, computers, Wi-Fi, etc. Imagine if today’s people lived in the 50s. With not one of the privileges we have today mentioned. How would we cope, would we adapt, what would change?

I feel this photo is depicting John Brack's Collin Street, 5pm Painting, all the people together as one crowd, but all individual in their own world of work, on their phones and devices and so on.

 Photo being taken description

We boarded the bus at Cardinal Ave and headed toward the city on the M61. The time was 8:30am as I looked at my watch heading toward the M2. Half an hour later and we had arrived at Pitt Street. Lachlan and Jesse the other photographers I took with me walked up to Hyde Park and did our photography trip of the city. Later around at 1:33pm we approached the street which the Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk Admin was stationed at. We waked about 150m south of the bridge and the admin centre to a zebra crossing with a pub on one side and the tunnel underneath on the other. I had a good view of the bridge, took out my camera, flicked the switch to manual and dialled in my settings. Bang! My shutter went off sending a light reading straight through my camera, capturing the picture. Mission Success!
